Cat lovers! What would you have said and/or done in this situation?

Last night about 10:00 P.M. as I was taking out the trash, a car ran over a stray cat on the road, and he crawled off to the side, bleeding profusely from his mouth. I felt terrible for him, because he was still breathing and coughing up blood. I immediately called my local animal control emergency number, and reported the incident. They told me to stand by the injured animal with a flashlight, so I did. I stood there calmly consoling the poor animal, as he lied there in pain. After the officer arrived, she had to euthanize the animal with an injection. Just then, the nosey preacher's wife from ran across the street, and wanted to know what was going on. Then she started to rant and rave about how stray cats were always pissing on her window ledge, and stinking up her house. She said she wished they were all dead. My mother has spoken with her, and knows for a fact that she's been feeding the strays behind her house. I told my mother we should go inside. Finally we did.
