Why didn't elephants go extinct thousands of years ago?

Okay, so there are no animals around similar to elephants (besides maybe hippos and rhinos). There used to be a world of mive animals-- giant birds, giant reptiles, giant insects, mammoths, mastodons, etc. All of them went extinct, at different time periods obviously, but they all went extinct. Why and how did elephants survive?
